Measurement Objects & Units

A measurement is only as clear as the object it represents and the unit it counts. Object resolution defines what exists inside the measurement; unit definition determines what one observation, one comparison and one conclusion actually refer to.

01 / FOUNDATIONAL DISTINCTIONS

Object, property and unit are not interchangeable.

The object is the entity or system being examined. The property is the characteristic being represented. The unit defines the level at which observations are recorded or conclusions are made.

OBJECT MODEL

Define the referent before producing the value.

A domain can be the object, visibility can be the property, URL–query pairs can be observation units and the domain can remain the final unit of analysis. Each role is different.

Measurement record = object identity + object boundary + property + observation unit + analysis unit + time + context
OMeasurement objectThe particular entity, population, event or system whose property is represented.
PMeasured propertyThe defined characteristic attributed to the object, not the object itself.
UₒUnit of observationThe smallest entity or event on which a raw record is captured.
UₐUnit of analysisThe level about which the final comparison, estimate or conclusion is made.
UₘUnit of measurementThe scale in which the value is expressed: count, percentage, milliseconds, rank or index points.
02 / OBJECT RESOLUTION ENGINE

See how one question creates several different units.

Select an object and alter its boundary. The console shows why data collection level and conclusion level must remain explicit.

03 / UNIT ROLE MATRIX

One study can contain four different kinds of “unit.”

The same word—page, query, domain or market—may occupy different roles depending on the research question. The role must be stated, not inferred.

04 / NESTED OBJECTS

Digital objects live inside other digital objects.

A domain contains hosts, sections and pages. Pages appear for queries in markets at moments in time. Aggregation across these levels can create conclusions that no single level supports.

05 / IDENTITY THROUGH TIME

The label may persist while the measured object changes.

URLs redirect, domains migrate, queries change meaning and markets shift. Longitudinal measurement requires identity rules that distinguish continuity from replacement.

OBJECT FINGERPRINT

Identity is a rule, not a string match.

A persistent label is evidence of continuity, but not proof. Resolve canonical location, ownership, content function, redirects, entity meaning and boundary membership.

06 / DENOMINATOR TEST

A rate changes when the counted universe changes.

Numerators attract attention. Denominators determine what the percentage represents. Change the eligible population and the same numerator answers a different question.

07 / WORKED EXAMPLES

Resolve the object before asking the data to speak.

These examples expose the exact level at which asset and demand measurements are observed, aggregated and interpreted.

CASE / DIGITAL ASSETDOMAIN COVERAGE

How complete is topical coverage?

The domain is not counted directly. Coverage emerges from page-level evidence mapped to a declared topic universe.

02

03

CASE / DEMANDQUERY MARKET

Where is opportunity concentrated?

Demand is not a free-floating number. It belongs to query classes, locations, devices, languages and time windows.

01
ObjectBounded demand universe for one market problem.
02
Observation unitQuery × location × device × observation window.
03

04

LEVEL DISCIPLINE: Conclusions may be made at the declared unit of analysis. They do not automatically transfer upward, downward or sideways to another level.
08 / OBJECT CONTROLS

Nine checks before collection begins.

A resolved object reduces hidden drift, duplicate counting and unsupported aggregation before any metric is calculated.

01Name the object

State the specific entity, event, population or system.

02Declare identity

Specify canonical rules, aliases, redirects and versions.

03Draw the boundary

List what is included, excluded and adjacent.

04Define the property

Separate the object from the characteristic measured.

05Set observation units

Identify what each raw row or event represents.

06Set analysis units

Name the level at which comparisons and conclusions apply.

07Set measurement units

Use a scale that supports the intended operation.

08Control denominators

Preserve the eligible universe behind every rate.

09Version the object

Rebaseline when identity or boundary materially changes.

09 / QUESTIONS

Objects and units, resolved.

What is a measurement object?

A measurement object is the explicitly identified entity, event, population or system whose defined property is being represented by a value.

What is the difference between a unit of observation and a unit of analysis?

The unit of observation is where a raw record is captured. The unit of analysis is the level about which the final estimate, comparison or conclusion is made.

Can a domain be both an object and a unit?

Yes. A domain may be the measurement object and the unit of analysis while pages, queries or captures remain the lower-level observation units.

Why does the denominator matter?

The denominator defines the eligible universe represented by a rate or share. Changing it changes the question answered by the value.

When does an object become a new object?

When changes in identity, function, ownership, meaning or boundary break the continuity rule required by the measurement. A persistent URL or label alone is insufficient.

What is a level-of-analysis error?

It occurs when evidence observed at one level is used to make unsupported claims at another—for example, inferring individual preference from aggregate market behavior.
