Metrics, Indicators & Proxies
A value may describe an observation, signal a wider condition or stand in for something that cannot be observed directly. The label does not decide which. The representation rule—and the evidence supporting it—does.

The same value can occupy different roles in different questions. Its role follows from what it directly represents and how much inference is required to reach the intended conclusion.
Metric
A metric is a quantitatively defined representation produced under a declared rule. It may be a count, duration, rate, ratio, position or index. A metric states how a property is expressed; it does not automatically prove why the property changed.
Indicator
An indicator is a measure interpreted as evidence of a wider state, direction or condition. Its usefulness depends on sensitivity, specificity, timing and context. Indicators support monitoring and diagnosis, not automatic explanation.
Proxy
A proxy substitutes an observable property for a target construct that is unavailable, expensive or difficult to measure directly. It requires an explicit bridge claim showing why the substitute tracks the construct in the represented context.
Each inferential step increases the burden of proof.
Construct distance is the gap between what is directly observed and what the final claim says. Distance is not automatically bad, but it must be visible and validated.
A metric is a complete rule—not a memorable label.
Two dashboards can display “visibility” while measuring different universes, applying different weights and producing values that cannot be compared.
Weighted query visibility
This example represents exposure for one domain inside a bounded query universe. The formula is only one field; scope and transformation rules complete the metric.
Included hosts and excluded sections are explicit.
Not traffic, revenue, quality or authority.
Membership defines the denominator represented.
Weights translate ranks into modeled opportunity.
Values remain bounded to the observation environment.
Sampling, timing and model variation remain visible.
Test the bridge between the observable signal and the intended construct.
Adjust four properties. The console does not certify a proxy; it demonstrates how relevance, stability, coverage and directness constrain the claims it can support.
Proxy qualification
Illustrative model. A strong score means the proxy deserves further validation—not that the target construct has been proven.
The proxy may support a bounded indicator claim. It should not replace direct measurement of the complete target construct.
The value stays fixed. The permitted statement changes.
A metric reports what was measured. Indicator and proxy claims require additional evidence because they extend beyond the directly represented property.
Distance and validation jointly determine proxy risk.
A distant proxy can still be useful when its relationship to the construct is repeatedly validated. A seemingly direct signal can mislead when its definition is weak.
Supports a bounded proxy claim with monitoring and stated limitations.
Conceptual closeness is not evidence that the relationship holds in practice.
May work inside validated conditions but should not be generalized automatically.
The signal produces confidence without a defensible bridge to the construct.
An index compresses evidence—and can compress away its meaning.
Composite metrics are useful for routing attention, but every normalization and weight encodes a judgment. Native components must remain inspectable.

What is the difference between a metric and an indicator?
A metric quantitatively represents a defined property. An indicator is a metric or observation interpreted as evidence of a broader condition, direction or state.
What makes a measure a proxy?
It becomes a proxy when an observable property substitutes for a different target construct that is not measured directly. The substitution requires validation.
Can the same number be a metric and a proxy?
Yes. It is a metric for the property it directly represents and a proxy when used to stand in for another construct. The proxy claim carries the additional evidential burden.
Are composite scores valid metrics?
They can be valid representations of their declared formula. They are not automatically valid representations of broad concepts such as quality, authority or strength.
What is a leading indicator?
A leading indicator changes before a target outcome often enough to support monitoring or forecasting. Its lead relationship must be tested and may decay over time.
Why can optimizing a proxy make it worse?
Once a proxy becomes a target, behavior may optimize the observable score rather than the underlying construct, weakening the relationship that made the proxy useful.
