Comparative Analysis
A difference is meaningful only after the comparison is aligned. Comparative analysis evaluates two or more states through equivalent objects, units, measures, scopes, time rules and evidence conditions—then reports the delta without inventing a cause.

The numerical operation is the easy part. The analytical work is proving that A and B represent sufficiently equivalent objects, populations and measures for their difference to carry meaning.
Comparative analysis aligns observations across a declared basis and evaluates their difference, similarity, ratio, relative position or change while preserving the conditions that make the comparison valid.
A comparative finding must say what was compared, why those objects were eligible, which baseline was used, how differences were calculated and which remaining asymmetries limit interpretation.

Comparable with limits
The two domains use aligned object units, collection windows and metric definitions. Market size remains different and must be normalized before interpreting magnitude.

A stronger aggregate result may disappear—or reverse—when the objects are compared inside equivalent segments. The matrix below uses simple illustrative conversion data.
Always inspect the mix.
Asset A receives more traffic from the easier segment. Asset B performs better inside both segments, yet its aggregate rate appears lower because its audience mix is harder.
Interpretation: segment composition, not weaker within-segment performance, produces the aggregate disadvantage. Compare like with like before ranking assets.
Equal rank movementis not equal change.
Positions are ordered states, but the distance between adjacent ranks does not carry constant traffic, visibility or competitive meaning.
Both moved −2. They did not lose the same thing.
The numerical position delta is identical. The first movement crosses high-visibility states; the second remains deep in the result set. Result features, intent, device, locale and competing URLs may also differ.

Normalize before declaring a gap.

A large delta can reston weak alignment.
Magnitude alone does not determine decision value. A useful comparison also needs strong coverage, low missingness and stable alignment.
Are the states equivalent?
Identity, unit, measure, scope, acquisition and time must support the same analytical question.
How much was observed?
A precise delta from a narrow or selected sample may have little external reach.
How large is the difference?
Report absolute and normalized scale where both are decision-relevant.
Could the direction change?
Missing states, sampling variation and measurement sensitivity can weaken or reverse the result.

These errors create clean-looking deltas whose objects, scales or evidence conditions never supported direct comparison.
Object mismatch
A page, domain, query group or market is compared as if it were the same analytical unit.
Denominator drift
Shares use different eligible populations while appearing directly equivalent.
Metric substitution
An available proxy silently replaces the property the comparison claims to measure.
Time misalignment
Fresh and stale states are treated as if observed simultaneously.
Relative-change inflation
A small baseline makes ordinary absolute movement appear extreme.
Aggregate reversal
Different segment mixes hide or reverse within-segment performance.
Winner-only sampling
Peers, periods or measures are selected after seeing which comparison favors the claim.
Difference as cause
An aligned delta is promoted into an explanation of why the objects differ.
