Conflict is not noise. It is structure.
Conflicting evidence exists when preserved observations support incompatible states of the same bounded claim. Resolution begins by testing whether the records truly address the same entity, definition, scope, unit, method and time—not by choosing the louder source.
Disagreement is evidence about the model of the claim.
A conflict can expose changing reality, mismatched definitions, incompatible scopes, measurement error, source dependence or a genuinely unresolved state. The first task is classification, not elimination.
Two records conflict only after they are shown to address the same proposition under compatible boundaries and still support incompatible conclusions.
Most apparent conflicts disappear when the claim is decomposed. Real conflicts remain after alignment and must be preserved as structured divergence, not averaged, voted away or hidden behind a single confidence label.
Change the axis. Watch the conflict decompose.
Each scenario begins with two incompatible records. The resolver compares seven coordinates, identifies the decisive delta and returns a bounded resolution state.

One contradiction can contain six hidden deltas.
The prism separates the dimensions most often collapsed inside broad natural-language claims. Only after alignment can residual disagreement be treated as material conflict.
Resolve names, versions, products, organizations and relation boundaries.
Align operational definitions before comparing values or states.
Compare geography, segment, sample, coverage and inclusion rules.
Separate changed state, publication lag, decay and supersession.
Expose instruments, models, assumptions and known error modes.
Align denominator, currency, rank type, rate, scale and aggregation.
Broad claims manufacture conflict. Scoped claims reveal structure.
Instead of forcing one verdict onto incompatible evidence, split the proposition into the smallest claims each record can actually support.
“The domain ranks fourth.”
No query, locale, device, result type or time boundary is declared.
Some conflicts are not contradictions. They are transitions.
A time-aware model preserves every state, identifies the change interval and prevents the newest record from erasing valid historical evidence.
Verified record at the original observation time.
Document or system state mutates after capture.
New record conflicts with an unbounded present-tense claim.
Both records pass integrity and identity controls.
Historical and current propositions are separated.
The cause determines the permissible repair.
Different conflict classes require different actions. Averaging, majority vote and authority override are not general resolution methods.
Did the state change?
Preserve the sequence.
Erases valid history.
Each for its window.
Validity and decay.
Same universe?
Name each scope.
Creates false universality.
Scoped separately.
Separate edges.
Same construct?
Recalculate only if valid.
Same word may differ.
Do not rewrite sources.
Resolve meaning.
Which assumptions differ?
Add independent method.
May combine incompatible measures.
Keep method labels.
Controlled method.
Resolution explains the difference. It does not select a favorite.
These examples show how seemingly incompatible evidence becomes precise once its hidden coordinates are exposed.
Position 4 versus outside top 10
The query string matches, but locale, device and capture time differ. Both records can be valid descriptions of distinct result states.
18% versus 31%
One source measures revenue among paid products; another measures active users across free and paid products.
Two answers cite different sources
Prompts, retrieval indexes, run times and generated claim boundaries differ. The outputs are primary records of separate runs, not direct proof that either factual answer is correct.
Equivalent tests disagree
Identity, scope, definition, unit and time align; methods are independently valid, yet the results remain incompatible.
Conflict is destroyed when the inconvenient record disappears.
These shortcuts create artificial certainty and prevent later reviewers from reconstructing the real evidence state.
Record count replaces independence, quality and claim fit.
The most prestigious source wins without testing access or scope.
Incompatible units, populations or states are combined into one number.
Divergence is removed because it does not fit the expected narrative.
Historical and current states are treated as simultaneous claims.
Different constructs share a label and appear comparable.
Copied records outvote an independent but conflicting observation.
An unknown state is converted into a conclusion because a verdict is desired.
Seven controls preserve disagreement until it is actually explained.
The protocol can resolve, partition, supersede, qualify or retain a conflict. Rejection is only one possible outcome.
Preserve both
Keep raw records, provenance and original claim relations intact.
Normalize claims
Rewrite propositions into explicit entity, relation and value forms.
Align meaning
Test definitions, units, denominators and categories.
Align boundaries
Compare scope, population, geography, time and version.
Inspect methods
Model source quality, access, instruments and error paths.
Run discriminator
Collect a pre-declared observation capable of separating explanations.
Report state
Resolve, partition, supersede or retain the conflict explicitly.
Not every disagreement is the same analytical event.
Before ranking sources or choosing a conclusion, classify the form of disagreement. Classification determines whether the correct operation is conversion, partition, versioning, qualification, supersession or further testing. A wrong class can make a technically careful repair logically invalid.
Two records use an identical term but define it differently. “Active customer” may mean a login within 30 days, a paid subscription at period end or any account with an open contract. The values cannot be compared until the operational definitions are aligned. The safe resolution is usually to rename and preserve both constructs rather than forcing one definition onto the other.
The observations refer to different countries, devices, market segments, query variants, account types or inclusion rules. A value for enterprise customers does not contradict a value for all users. Partition the claim by population and denominator. Only generalize beyond those boundaries when an additional, justified inference supports the extension.
A status, ranking, price, policy or feature can change. Records from T₀ and T₁ form a sequence if each accurately captures its own time. Preserve both timestamps, establish the order of states and decide which record is valid for the present claim. Never treat “latest” as equivalent to “most reliable” without checking capture quality and effective date.
Percent, percentage points, counts, rates, shares and index values are not interchangeable. Even equal units may hide different denominators. Convert only when the mathematical relationship is valid and every required quantity is known. If conversion is impossible, report distinct measures and explain what each one represents.
A survey, direct capture, model estimate and administrative record can observe different aspects of the same subject. Method divergence requires inspection of sampling, instrument behavior, missingness, transformations and error paths. Prestige cannot replace this inspection. The method that best fits the exact claim may be more useful than the method with the strongest general reputation.
When entity, proposition, definition, scope, time, unit and method are sufficiently aligned, disagreement may be genuine. Preserve the conflict, lower confidence where appropriate and identify a discriminating observation. “Unresolved” is not a failure when the available evidence cannot justify a winner; it is the accurate state of knowledge.
Comparison begins only after the coordinates align.
Two values are comparable when they represent sufficiently equivalent claims under declared conditions. Visual similarity, matching labels or identical units are not enough. The gate below separates repairable differences from cases that must remain distinct.
Is the same entity, version or asset being described?
Do both records assert the same proposition?
Are population and inclusion rules aligned?
Do the records describe the same valid period?
Are construct, unit and denominator equivalent?
Comparable(A,B) requires aligned identity, claim, scope, time and measure.
Method quality is then assessed in relation to the normalized claim. A record can be authentic and well preserved yet still be irrelevant to the exact proposition under review. Comparability therefore precedes aggregation, averaging, voting and confidence synthesis.
Weight the evidence against the claim—not the reputation of its container.
Resolution is not a universal leaderboard of sources. Weight is claim-specific and depends on access, directness, independence, method fit, temporal fit, transparency and known error. A source may be strong for one proposition and weak for another.
Could the source observe the claimed fact?
A first-party operator may have direct access to its current product status but limited access to total-market behavior. An external measurement service may observe market-wide signals but not private transactions. Assess access to the exact object and period instead of assigning permanent authority to either source.
Do several records represent several observations?
Ten articles repeating one press release provide one originating evidence line, not ten independent confirmations. Trace quotations, tables, screenshots and summaries back to their earliest recoverable source. Correlated records can still show dissemination, but they must not multiply confidence in the underlying claim.
Does the method answer this question?
A large sample does not rescue a measure of the wrong construct. A traffic estimate cannot directly establish revenue; an AI answer cannot establish what its cited source actually says; a current SERP capture cannot prove a stable historical ranking. Weight falls when the observation-to-claim bridge requires unsupported inference.
Which failure modes could produce the value?
Every method has an error model: sampling error, classification error, missing observations, instrument drift, extraction mistakes, stale caches or transformation loss. A useful record exposes enough detail to estimate direction and magnitude. Unknown error does not equal zero error; it widens the justified confidence interval.
Evidence weight is a vector, not a magic score.
A compact working representation is W = {access, directness, independence, fit, time, transparency, error}. Keep the dimensions visible. Collapsing them into one number can hide why one evidence line is preferred and can make different weaknesses appear interchangeable.
Collect evidence that can separate explanations—not merely add another opinion.
When alignment does not resolve the conflict, design a new observation whose possible outcomes favor different explanations. A useful test is specified before the result is known and targets the smallest unresolved delta.
State rivals
Write the minimum competing explanations. Avoid a vague “source A versus source B” frame; sources are carriers, while explanations concern the world or the measurement process.
Find the delta
Identify which unresolved axis would make both results possible: time, population, definition, instrument, transformation, access or a real state difference.
Predict outcomes
For each explanation, state what the new observation should show. If every outcome is compatible with every explanation, the proposed test cannot discriminate.
Fix conditions
Align entity, scope, time, unit and acquisition conditions. Record exceptions in advance so that later adjustments do not follow the preferred result.
Set thresholds
Define what magnitude or pattern counts as support, contradiction or inconclusive evidence. Include tolerance for known measurement uncertainty.
Preserve capture
Store the raw record, timestamp, environment, method, transformation and analyst action. Reproducibility matters most when the new result is decisive.
Update state
Resolve, partition, supersede or retain the conflict according to the declared rule. Document remaining uncertainty instead of converting it into silence.
The same resolution logic travels across domains. The coordinates change; the discipline does not.
Each case begins with a tempting contradiction. The diagnostic task is to expose what must be aligned, what can be preserved and which uncertainty remains after repair.
1,900 searches versus 880 searches
One dataset reports a twelve-month national average for an exact query family; another reports a recent month for a broader keyword grouping and a different location. The values do not yet describe one object. Preserve provider definitions, align location and period, inspect grouping behavior and compare ranges rather than declaring one number false.
4,200 links versus 11,600 links
Link indexes discover different portions of the web, apply different canonicalization rules and refresh at different rates. Compare referring domains, live-link status, canonical targets and observation dates before comparing totals. The counts may both be valid outputs of different indexes; neither is a complete census of all links.
Founded in 2018 versus founded in 2021
The earlier date may describe a predecessor project, while the later date describes legal incorporation or public launch. Normalize the entity and the meaning of “founded.” Report distinct events if both matter: project inception, company formation, product launch and rebrand are not interchangeable dates.
Minor interruption versus material outage
A provider measures infrastructure availability, while customers report loss of a critical function in one region. Both descriptions can coexist. Align the affected service, user segment, duration, region and severity scale. The resolution may require a layered claim: limited infrastructure failure with material operational consequences for a bounded population.
Complete guide versus major gaps
One review checks whether required headings exist; another tests whether users can complete real tasks and whether claims have supporting evidence. The apparent disagreement is a difference in the coverage model. Declare dimensions such as entity, intent, task, evidence and temporal coverage, then report which dimensions are complete and which remain deficient.
Brand cited in one run and absent in another
Prompt wording, model version, retrieval corpus, location, session context and run time can alter the answer. Treat each output as a preserved run, not a timeless statement of visibility. Repeat controlled runs, record exposure frequency and validate the cited claims at their original sources.
€2.4 billion versus €4.1 billion
One estimate counts product revenue; another includes services, secondary transactions and adjacent categories. Before selecting a figure, reconstruct each market boundary and valuation method. If no common denominator exists, report a bounded range with scenario definitions rather than a false blended total.
The redesign improved conversion versus caused no change
A before-and-after comparison shows growth, while a controlled segment comparison shows no detectable effect. Seasonality, traffic composition and concurrent campaigns may explain the difference. Preserve both analyses, distinguish association from causal effect and design a test that isolates exposure to the redesign.
A resolved conflict needs a traceable record—not only a cleaner sentence.
The record must show what disagreed, why the disagreement occurred, which operations were applied and what remains uncertain. This prevents a later reader from mistaking a scoped repair for universal truth.
Preserve the source wording, then record each normalized subject, relation, value, qualifier and negation. Normalization must clarify meaning without silently strengthening or weakening the original assertion.
Identify the originating evidence line, capture date, version, custody and every transformation used in comparison. Derived summaries remain linked to their preserved inputs.
List identity, definition, scope, time, unit, method and lineage. Mark each axis as aligned, repairable, incompatible or unknown, with a short justification.
Record conversions, partitions, temporal versions, exclusions and weighting decisions. Include the rule and inputs so another analyst can reproduce the operation.
Use an explicit state. “Resolved” means the contradiction has been explained under the declared boundary; it does not mean that every related uncertainty has disappeared.
State remaining uncertainty, current confidence and the evidence that would reopen the conflict. A later source, changed state or better method may require revision without making the earlier process irrational.
resolution record = claim pair + coordinates + diagnosis + operation + result + uncertainty + review trigger
The strongest output is not a winner label. It is a compact explanation that allows a human reviewer, search system or retrieval model to distinguish observation from interpretation and current validity from historical state.
Conflict resolution, clarified without false certainty.
These answers separate common analytical shortcuts from defensible evidence practice.
Should the newest source automatically win?
No. Recency matters when the claim concerns a changeable present state, but a newer record can still use the wrong scope, weak access or an invalid method. Compare effective time and capture quality. For historical claims, an older primary record may be the most direct evidence.
Does agreement among more sources resolve the conflict?
Only when the sources represent sufficiently independent evidence lines and fit the claim. Repetition can reflect copying, syndication or a common upstream dataset. Trace lineage before counting agreement, and preserve a high-quality minority record when its contradiction remains unexplained.
Can conflicting numbers be averaged?
Only after demonstrating that they measure the same construct, population, period and unit, and after selecting a defensible aggregation model. Averaging cannot repair incompatible denominators or definitions. When conditions differ, separate estimates or a scenario range is usually more honest.
When may an evidence line be rejected?
Reject it when authenticity fails, the record is corrupted, the method cannot support the claim, a decisive error is demonstrated or the source is outside the declared boundary. Preserve the rejected record and reason. Disagreement with the preferred conclusion is never sufficient.
Is an AI-generated answer evidence?
It is direct evidence of what that system produced under a recorded run context. It is not automatically evidence that its factual claims are true. Preserve the prompt, model or interface state, time and answer, then validate important claims against recoverable sources.
Can a conflict remain unresolved?
Yes. If the decisive delta cannot be observed or credible aligned methods remain incompatible, retain both evidence lines and reduce confidence. State what would discriminate between them. An explicit unknown protects the analysis from invented closure.
Does superseded evidence become false?
Not necessarily. A record may remain accurate for its original period while no longer supporting a present-state claim. Mark its temporal validity and the event or evidence that superseded it. Historical truth and current applicability are different properties.
What should the final statement contain?
State the bounded claim, supporting and conflicting lines, decisive differences, resolution operation, confidence, remaining unknowns and review condition. Readers should be able to see both what is concluded and what the available evidence does not justify.
Challenge the resolution before it becomes a reusable fact.
A second reviewer should be able to test the logic without repeating the entire investigation. These questions expose hidden substitutions, undocumented transformations and certainty that exceeds the surviving evidence.
Compare each normalized proposition with its source record. Check whether qualifiers, uncertainty, negation or population limits disappeared during rewriting. A clearer sentence is not valid if it changes what the source asserted. Keep both the original wording and the analytical form so semantic loss remains detectable.
Verify aliases, subsidiaries, predecessors, products, domains and versions. Two sources may refer to related but non-identical objects. A company statement cannot automatically be assigned to every product, and a historical domain state cannot automatically describe the present organization. Record the identity link and its confidence.
Compare the population, geography, channel, device, market and time of the final claim with every supporting record. A narrow observation may support a narrow conclusion while failing to justify a universal one. If the conclusion extends beyond the observed boundary, label the extension as inference and explain its basis.
Check formulas, exchange rates, unit conversions, deduplication, category mapping and aggregation. Inputs, versions and rounding rules must be available. A transformation can make evidence comparable, but it also introduces assumptions and error. If the result changes materially under a reasonable alternative rule, report that sensitivity.
Trace citations and extracted values upstream. Group records that originate from the same dataset, announcement, study or observation. Multiple distribution paths improve discoverability, not independence. When a conflict is decided by apparent majority, confirm that the majority does not collapse into one copied source.
Ask why one evidence line received more weight. The answer should identify better access, temporal fit, directness, method fit, independence or lower known error. “More authoritative,” “more popular” or “more precise” is insufficient without explaining how that property improves support for this exact proposition.
Resolution may explain why two records differ without establishing the true value of the underlying construct. Separate removal of contradiction from proof of a final answer. List unobserved populations, unavailable denominators, inaccessible methods and alternative explanations that survive the repair. Confidence should reflect those remaining gaps.
Define a date, state change, better measurement, new primary record or failed prediction that would trigger review. Without a reopening condition, a resolution can harden into dogma. With one, the conclusion remains stable enough to use while still responding rationally to stronger or more current evidence.
A resolution is ready when another reviewer can reconstruct, challenge and update it.
Auditability is not decorative documentation. It is the mechanism that separates a bounded evidence judgment from an unsupported preference. The record should reveal where observation ends, where transformation begins and where analytical judgment enters.
Resolution has several valid endings. “One source wins” is only one of them.
Select the outcome that follows from the diagnosis. Every outcome preserves the claim boundary, affected evidence lines and remaining uncertainty.
After definitions, units and boundaries are aligned, the values fall within the expected uncertainty range. Retain both evidence lines and report convergence. Do not describe harmless measurement variation as contradiction.
Each record is valid for a different population, period, version or construct. Rewrite the result as multiple bounded propositions. Partitioning resolves the apparent contradiction without pretending that the underlying states are identical.
The older record remains historical evidence, while a newer verified observation governs the present-state claim. Preserve the transition date and effective boundary. Supersession changes applicability, not necessarily the truth of the earlier capture.
Authenticity failure, corruption, invalid measurement, wrong identity or decisive methodological error can disqualify an evidence line for the claim. Keep the rejected record, defect and rejection rule so the decision can be audited.
Aligned, credible evidence continues to disagree, or the decisive coordinates remain unavailable. Report both lines, reduce confidence and define a discriminating test or review trigger. Retained conflict is more useful than manufactured consensus.
When action cannot wait for complete resolution, state the assumption that selects the working claim, its downside if wrong and the evidence that would reverse the position. Conditional use must never be presented as unconditional proof.
Conflict preserves the delta. Temporal validity tests its lifespan.
EVD/07 diagnoses disagreement. EVD/08 determines which observations remain valid for a present claim and how evidence decays, changes or becomes superseded.
