An evidence gap is a missing or unusable support relation required by a material claim. An unknown is the unresolved value behind that gap. The distinction matters: the gap belongs to the evidence architecture; the unknown belongs to the state being investigated.

Why this format works: the observation remains independently testable, the missing state cannot be mistaken for a negative fact and the next collection action is tied to a defined stopping point. If the sentence is quoted outside the report, its market, device and time boundary travel with it. If new evidence arrives, the researcher can update the unknown without rewriting the earlier observation. This creates a versioned finding: what was known, what was not known, why the difference mattered and which later record changed the status. A limitation written this way contributes information instead of functioning as a generic disclaimer.
