Intent mismatch occurs when a page is relevant to the subject of a query but fails to perform the mission the user is trying to complete. The failure may involve page role, depth, format, evidence, freshness, audience, geography or the next action.
The diagnostic task is not simply to ask whether the keyword appears on the page. It is to compare the user’s mission with the response contract the page actually fulfills.
Relevance answers “about what?” Intent answers “for what purpose?”
A document can mention the right entity, cover the right subtopic and still be a poor response because the user needs a different task, depth, format or destination.

The page performs the job the user expects to complete.
“Intent mismatch” is an analytical SEO concept, not a published Google score or one fixed ranking factor. The models and diagnostic values on this page are conceptual tools for comparing query missions with page behavior.
Misalignment can happen at several layers.
The most useful diagnosis identifies the exact contract the page breaks instead of labeling the whole URL “wrong intent.”
Keep the topic. Change the required job.
Select a query–page pair. The analyzer shows where the page contract diverges from the user mission and what structural correction is most appropriate.
The page explains the category but does not help the user compare alternatives. Topical relevance survives; decision support does not.

No single metric proves intent mismatch. Use query–page data, result context and on-page behavior together to decide whether the page role is misaligned.
CTR, position, engagement or conversion can change for many reasons. Treat them as evidence to investigate, not as direct proof that “Google detected wrong intent.”
The result page exposes the response environment.
Observe which result types, page roles and interface elements repeatedly appear for the query. This does not reveal a secret intent label, but it can show what kinds of responses are currently being surfaced.
Different missions need different primary page roles.
A page can support secondary needs, but its dominant structure should make the primary mission unmistakable.
The mission can be right while the response depth is wrong.
Intent alignment is not only category matching. The page must meet the user’s knowledge state and output expectations.
Not every mismatch requires a new page.
Some queries legitimately contain multiple missions. The decision is whether compatible secondary needs can be supported inside one page or whether the architecture should split them into dedicated destinations.
Fix the architecture at the level where it breaks.
Intent repair is not always a rewrite. Sometimes the correct action is to reframe, split, consolidate, redirect or improve internal routing.

Search Console performance data can show which queries surfaced which pages and how impressions, clicks and CTR changed. Use that evidence to identify candidates for deeper intent analysis.
Search Console reports performance, not “intent correctness.” Query–page analysis must still be interpreted with SERP context, page role and user task in mind.
Mismatch can occur inside answer synthesis too.
Long conversational prompts often contain several explicit constraints. A useful answer must preserve the mission across retrieval, evidence selection and synthesis rather than satisfying only the broad topic.
Audit the response contract, not just the keyword target.
A robust audit identifies the user’s primary mission, the page’s actual role and every material delta between them.
