Navigational IntentThe query is a route request to a known destination.

Navigational intent describes a search mission in which the user is primarily trying to reach a particular website, page, product surface, account area, profile, tool, documentation section or other known destination.

The query may contain a brand name, product name, page function, typo or destination qualifier. The task is not simply to return information about the entity. It is to resolve identity and route the user to the intended endpoint with minimal friction.

ANALYTICAL NOTE“Navigational intent” is a practical search/SEO analysis concept. It is not a public Google score or a claim that Google exposes one fixed internal intent taxonomy.

Navigational intent is about destination resolution.

The user often already knows the organization, site, product, profile or function they want. Search acts as a navigation layer that converts an imperfect query into a usable path.

WORKING DEFINITION

A navigational query asks the search environment to locate and route toward a specific intended destination.

The searcher may not remember the exact URL, path, spelling or interface location. Search therefore has to resolve identity, distinguish plausible destinations and surface the route most likely to satisfy the task.

Google Search Console now exposes a branded-query filter that can include brand names, misspellings and brand-associated products. That is useful performance segmentation, but it should not be treated as a synonym for navigational intent.
