Search intent mapping is the process of grouping queries by user mission and assigning each group to the page, content role or cluster best equipped to satisfy that mission. The objective is not to force every keyword onto a URL. It is to create a coherent routing system from demand to knowledge.
A useful map separates different jobs even when they share the same entity. It also combines query variants when they expect the same response, preventing unnecessary duplication and reducing intent conflict.

Two queries can use different language while expecting the same page. Two nearly identical queries can require completely different response contracts. Mapping begins with mission, not string similarity.

Select a query family. The router exposes its dominant mission, expected content role, recommended destination and the mapping mistake most likely to break satisfaction.
The user needs orientation before evaluation or action. Definitions, core attributes, examples and category context should dominate the response.

Intent mapping should compress redundant query variants into one destination while preserving genuinely different tasks as separate URLs or content roles.
Every destination needs a primary job.
Secondary intents can support the main mission, but a URL becomes unstable when several incompatible jobs compete for the same primary role.

Use observed query–page data to test the map.
Search Console can show which queries produced visibility and which URLs were shown for a selected query. That data can validate architecture decisions, but it does not expose an intent score.
Search Console query data is not a complete intent taxonomy: some queries are anonymized or omitted, data can be truncated, and metrics are aggregated according to report dimensions. Use it as observed evidence, not as a perfect map of all demand.
The map should guide the next likely mission.
Intent architecture is not only about landing pages. Internal links can connect adjacent user states so the system supports progression from learning to evaluation and action.
Intent maps become useful retrieval maps.
Complex AI-search questions can decompose into several sub-missions. A site with explicit mission-based architecture exposes clearer candidate passages and destinations for different parts of the task.
Audit the routing system, not only individual URLs.
A healthy map has explicit missions, clear ownership, limited overlap and useful transitions between adjacent stages.
